Buyer's Guide

What to Look for in a Two Post Car Lift

Lifting Capacity

Match capacity to your heaviest vehicle plus 20% safety margin. Most home mechanics need 10,000-11,000 lbs for trucks and SUVs. Professional shops should opt for 12,000-lb models for commercial vehicles.

Safety Features

Look for dual-lock systems, automatic safety locks, and certified construction. CE certification indicates European safety standards. Overhead designs prevent vehicle tipping better than floor-plate models.

Clear Floor vs. Floor Plate

Clear floor lifts maximize workspace with no crossbar obstruction. Floor-plate models cost less but limit access. Choose clear floor for frequent transmission work or maximum mobility.

Power Requirements

Most residential lifts need 220V single-phase power. Verify your garage's electrical capacity before purchase. Professional shops may require three-phase for heavier-duty models.

Arm Adjustability

2+3 arm configurations accommodate wider range of vehicle frames. Adjustable arms are essential for working on both compact cars and heavy trucks. Look for telescoping and swing arm options.

Certification & Warranty

ALI certification is the gold standard for automotive lifts. CE certification indicates European compliance. Check warranty coverage on hydraulic cylinders, motors, and structural components.

Frequently Asked Questions

Garage and Workshop — FAQ

What lifting capacity do I need for a two post car lift?

Most home garages require 10,000-11,000 lbs capacity for trucks and SUVs. Professional shops should choose 12,000-lb models for commercial vehicles. Always select capacity 20% above your heaviest vehicle's weight.

What's the difference between clear floor and floor plate designs?

Clear floor lifts have no crossbar between posts, maximizing workspace for transmission work. Floor plate models are more affordable but restrict access. Clear floor designs offer superior versatility for most users.

Can I install a two post car lift myself?

DIY installation is possible with mechanical experience and proper concrete (minimum 4" thick, 3,000 PSI). Most buyers benefit from professional installation to ensure safety compliance and warranty validation.

What electrical requirements do these lifts need?

Most residential two post lifts require 220V single-phase power with 30-amp service. Verify your garage's electrical panel capacity. Professional-grade models may need three-phase power for higher capacities.

Are these lifts ALI certified?

While our top picks meet CE safety standards, ALI certification is the North American gold standard. Check manufacturer specifications for current certification status, as models are regularly updated.

How much ceiling height do I need?

Minimum ceiling height equals lift maximum height plus 2 feet for safety clearance. The KT-M120L requires 14-foot ceilings for full extension. Measure carefully before purchasing to avoid installation issues.
